Most of the MP3s I have in my collection for this CD are not on YouTube or the Internet, so I had to substitute from pieces that are available. Nevertheless, the list below covers a good spectrum of Middle East sounds, including some of the best.

Arabic

Any list of 20th Century Arab music must start with this name. On the occasion of her passing, biographer Virginia Danielson wrote in Harvard Magazine, "Imagine a singer with the virtuosity of Joan Sutherland or Ella Fitzgerald, the public persona of Eleanor Roosevelt and the audience of Elvis and you have Umm Kulthum, the most accomplished singer of her century in the Arab world".
Umm Kulthum (1904-1975), Info       Song1:Enta Omri       2:Sirat El Hob       3:Ansak
Some others: Afaf Radi       Fairuz (Birth 1935)       Ilham Al Madfai       Warda (B:1940)

Turkish

Müzeyyen Senar is the most powerful living voice of Turkish art music that even Kemal Atatürk listened to with such awe. She is still a revered name in classical Turkish music. I include 4 other names who are equally loved in Turkey. By the way, although they sound very similar, Arabs and Turks both can almost always differentiate between their music, just from the instrumental sound.
Müzeyyen Senar (Birth 1918), Info       Song 1       Song 2       Song 3       Song 4
Some others: Safiye Ayla (1907-98)    Hamiyet Yüceses (1914-96)    Zeki Müren (1931-96)    Emel Sayın (1945)

Belly Dance

Belly Dance Links, 1       2       Nightclub, 1       2       Darbouka       How?

The links for Belly Dance, on what is the most vibrant component of Mid-East dance, rhythm, beat, and showmanship are quite bad, with a few hidden semi-gems stuck here and there. I will update this part if and when I come across better links.

West/Latin & Arab Combo

01-Desert Rose (by Sting)
02-Viento del Arena (by Gypsy Kings)
03-Ojos Asi (by Shakira & Amr Diab) a favorite of mine!
There are a few others, like "Salma Ya Salama," but they don't appeal to me.
